California Sea Lion

  • California Sea Lions are members of the “eared” seal family.
  • Unlike their “earless” counterparts, eared seals are able to rotate their hindquarters, allowing them to “walk” or lope on land.
  • Males are up to 8 feet (2.5 m) and weigh 900 lbs (405 kg).
    • The smaller females are up to 5’ 6” (1.7 m) and weigh 250 lbs (113 kg).
  • Their extensive diet includes at least 50 species of fish as well as mollusks, squid and octopus.

Stellar Sea Lion

  • Stellar sea lions are the largest of the “eared” seals.
  • Unlike their “earless” counterparts, eared seals are able to rotate their hindquarters, allowing them to “walk” or lope on land.
  • Males are often 2 or 3 times larger than females, averaging 8.5 to 11 feet (2.6 - 3.4 m) and weigh up to 2200 lbs (1000 kg).
    • Females are 6 to 7 feet (1.8 - 2.1 m) and weigh 600 to 800 lbs (270 - 360 kg).
  • Favoring coastal waters with rocky shores, these animals eat fish, squid and mollusks.

You will Also See

Two Types of Local Seals

  • Harbour Seals

    • Harbour seals are plentiful here year round, the are Victoria's best panhandlers in front of our office at Fisherman's Wharf

    • These curious and often comical mammals are members of the earless or “true” seal family.
    • Feeding primarily on fish, adult harbour seals are around 5 to 6 feet (1.8 m) long and weigh in the neighbourhood of 250 lbs (13 kg ).
    • Although both sexes are similar in size, the average lifespan is 30 years for females and 20 years for males.
  • Northern Elephant Seals

    • Northern elephant seals are rare because they are endangered but you will see some when the tour arrives at Race Rocks

    • These are the largest seals of all: males are 12 - 16 feet (3.7 - 4.9 m) and weigh up to 2.5 tons (2300 kg); females are 7 - 12 feet (2.1 - 3.7 m) and weigh 1 ton or 910 kg.
    • Migrating twice yearly between their northern feeding grounds and summer breeding/molting beaches, these giants feed on a variety of marine creatures such as large fish, squid, octopus and crab.

  • Otters

    •  There are 2 types of North American otters and both may be encountered: Sea Otters and North American River Otters

  • Porpoises

    • Local Dall's Porpoises like to bow ride on the way to Race Rocks

  • Eagles
    • Bald eagles are plentiful in the Victoria BC area.
  • Transient killer whales
    •  frequent the area, and the ultimate thrill awaits those who witness the spectacle of these carnivores hunting.
  • California and Stellar Sea lions
    • Between September to May, often 1000 or more  can be viewed.
  • Over 500 seabirds, including Osprey and eagles, utilize the islands as a nesting ground and stopover during migration.
  • Once hunted and mismanaged to the brink of extinction, rare elephant seals can often been seen hauled out on these rocky outcroppings.

This ecologically diverse region is created by twice daily flood and ebb tides producing cool nutrient rich waters that support an exceptional variety of marine creatures. With the snow-capped peaks of the Olympic Mountains glistening in the background, you’ll always remember the magic of the land we fondly call “The Race”.

The Skipper's Corner

Ron King

"The Legendary Captain" Ron King, Owner Operator of Sea King Adventures, has over 35 years of experience in the beautiful waters around Victoria and Vancouver Island. He is a certified Master Skipper with The distinction of being Victoria's most knowledgeable marine naturalist and conservationist .

Since starting SeaKing Adventures in 1995 Ron boasts a perfect safety record.

Born and raised in Victoria, Captain Ron has over 30 years of professional marine experience - including 25 years of commercial fishing and 11 years whale watching.

Like his father before him, going to sea is the only life he’s known. He began his career as a deckhand on board his father’s fishing boat "Five Kings II" at the tender age of 11. By the time he was 20, he owned and operated his first fishing vessel, "Aquarius".

In 1995, with the commercial fishery in decline, he discovered his passion and purpose in whale watching and founded SeaKing Adventures Inc.

Because SeaKing Adventures  is Victoria’s only 100% family owned and operated marine tour company, Ron’s commitment to quality, safety and satisfaction is guaranteed! His central location on board the vessel allows him to provide Victoria’s most comprehensive fully narrated, totally interactive and personalized tours. Boasting a spotless safety record and sightings guarantee, Ron’s qualifications and experience combine to make him the city’s premier guide.

Our vessel can accommodate groups of 12 comfortably and is Canadian Coast Guard inspected annually. The soft riding boat has comfy leather seats, an onboard toilet and is equipped with all the latest in GPS, radar and communications apparatus. Safety survival suits are supplied for each passenger.

Passengers can all expect a exciting, educational, safe and comfortable tour of the area whales and wildlife.
