Killer Whales Pics
Transient Orcas are called Killer Whales as they will eat larger animals such as seals or sea lions. They travel in pairs or small pods.
Transient Orcas are often found near Race Rocks where there are lots of seals and sea lions to feed on. These are the whales that give the orcas the name killer whales.
Large whales tend to lobtail by positioning themselves vertically downwards into the water and then slapping the surface by bending the tail stock.
However, studies of Bowhead Whales have shown that the noise of a lobtail travels much less well than that of a vocal call or a breach. Thus the lobtail is probably important visually as well as acoustically, and may be a sign of aggression.
